A stay in NantNant was founded by Benedictine monks in the 10th century who drained the marshy site, where the Dourbie Gorge opens out, creating a lush valley. It has, for a long time, been called The Garden of Aveyron and is an ideal starting point for lovers of excursions and all outdoor activities. Nearby to Nant are the limestone plateaux of the Grands Causses (Larzac...) realm of the wild orchid, and the impressive gorges with eagles and vultures to delight those interested in nature and birdwatching. There is also the Cevennes, popular with anglers and mushroom gatherers. Nants old buildings, 5 churches and abbey bring to life the history of the village and the rich heritage of the surrounding area will provide a multitude of interesting outings: fortified villages of the Templars and Hospitallers (La Couvertoirade, Sainte Eulalie de Cernon ), the hamlets of Cantobre and Saint Véran perched up high on their rocky outcrops. Within easy driving distance discover the excellent regional market town of Millau, famous not only for its leather industry but also for its Gallo-Roman pottery, and Roquefort, well known for its cheese and caves, etc And last, but not least, the amazing natural sites in the vicinity such as Montpellier-le-Vieux, the caves of l'Aven Armand and Dargilan, the Cirque de Navacelles, l'Abime de Bramabiau and Mont Aigoual, all spectacular places to visit for young and old. Discover all this by staying in one of Catherine and Thierry Schreibers properties either on a self-catering (gite) or bed & breakfast basis .(01/01/07) |
